The Only Son:Spring/Summer 2012Le Mans For Spring Summer 2012, The Only Son looks to the fast-paced world of Formula 1 racing. The exciting and high-pressured environment of the racing track is explored throughout the collection via a bold colour palette, streamlined silhouettes and subtle detailing.Of particular influence are the large-scale panoramic photographs of German artist Andreas Gursky. His project based around Formula 1 racing entitled ‘Boxenstopp’ consists of a series of images focusing on the most intensive few seconds of a race; the pit-stop. His hyper-realistic images capture an authentic perception of the sport, showing dozens of men is bright uniforms surrounding the machines for those few yet vital seconds. A second influence is Steve McQueen in the 1971 film, Le Mans, which portrays the most enduring and trying twenty-four hours for a racer during the infamous annual Grand Prix. The Only Son takes the stereotypically retro racing uniform and strips it down to a purely modern and minimal aesthetic. Racing suit details are notable throughout the collection, evident in lightweight jumpsuits, striking colour blocking and clean lines. Abstract prints placed on t-shirts are inspired by hazy mirages whilst sleek perspex headpieces represent the ubiquitous racing helmet.Vibrant hues of sangria red and steel blue are contrasted against neutral ash, camel and slate tones reminiscent of plush racing car interiors, bringing a notion of softness to the pieces. Fabrics range from luxurious sand-washed silk satin used with transparent organdy, to printed canvas cotton and printed rayon jersey, emulating a sense of pared down luxury within the collection. The new capsule collection of unisex jewelry stays in keeping with the labels utilitarian, androgynous approach to accessories, and further emphasizes the racing concept. A typical tyre pattern is used to create pieces with strong graphic lines and movement. Pieces are offered in antique silver with brass options of black and brushed rose gold finishes. |
